'Adriana Lecouvreur' to Crown the Estonian State Visit to Lithuania

The upcoming State Visit of the President of the Republic of Estonia, Alar Karis, to Lithuania in April 2026 will highlight the close cultural and diplomatic ties between the two Baltic nations, culminating in a distinguished evening at the opera.

As part of the official programme, a reception hosted by Alar Karis, President of the Republic of Estonia, Mrs Sirje Karis, and Kaili Terras, Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia, will be held in honour of H.E. Gitanas Nausėda, President of the Republic of Lithuania, and Mrs Diana Nausėdienė. The evening is set to conclude with a performance of Adriana Lecouvreur by Francesco Cilea.

This production represents a significant example of long-standing cultural collaboration between Estonia and Lithuania. It is a co-production between the Estonian PromFest and the Kaunas State Musical Theatre. Their partnership, established in 2011, has already resulted in eight co-productions - an impressive testament to sustained artistic exchange in the Baltic region.

The choice of Adriana Lecouvreur is closely tied to Lithuanian soprano Gabrielė Bukinė, who selected the role after winning the prestigious Klaudia Taev Competition. Her interpretation of Adriana has been widely recognised and honoured with Lithuania’s highest theatre award Golden Stage Cross.

" Adriana reminds us how good it feels to shed what is not ours, to stop trying to please and simply to be – with everything that we are. If this production helps even one viewer remember how fragile, strong, and inherently beautiful a person is, then it has all been worth it!"

In this upcoming performance, the title role will be performed by soprano Marija Arutiunova, finalist of the Klaudia Taev Competition for young opera singers. The Klaudia Taev Competition is the main event of the Pärnu Opera Music Festival PromFest.

Set within the framework of a state visit, the event underlines how cultural collaboration can serve as a powerful extension of diplomacy. The enduring partnership between PromFest and Kaunas State Musical Theatre continues to strengthen artistic ties and reinforce the shared cultural space of the Baltic region.

"This opera - a long-unnoticed gem of the repertory and a rather tough nut for both performers and audience - turned out unexpectedly powerful /.../ Love and hate, fragility and strength, beauty; doubts about present and future choices; the clash between inner and outer worlds - and above all, the uniting leitmotif of freedom."
